Become an Australian Citizen

Australian citizenship offers you the right to live, work, and participate fully in Australia’s national community.

You must

Be a permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen holding a Special Category (subclass 444) visa (SCV) when you apply and when we decide your application

Be in Australia when we decide on your application in most cases

intend to live in Australia or maintain a lasting link with Australia while overseas.

New Zealand citizens holding an SCV are considered permanent residents for citizenship purposes.

This information is for people 59 years and under.

A parent can include a dependent child aged 15 years or younger in their application at no extra cost. The child must be a permanent resident.

If a parent is not applying to become an Australian citizen, a child 15 years or younger can apply on their own and must pay the associated fee.

A parent cannot include a child aged 16 or 17 in their application. They must apply on their own.

A parent can include a dependent child aged 15 or younger in their application at no extra cost.

Children aged 16 or 17 must apply separately.

Those aged 17 or under, 60 or over, or with certain impairments have alternative pathways to citizenship.

Applicants aged 18 and above must be of good character and have basic English proficiency.

Passing the citizenship test (75% overall and all 5 Australian values questions correct) satisfies the language requirement.

You may already be an Australian citizen if you were born in Australia and have lived here for your first 10 years, or were born to New Zealand citizen parents.

You don’t need to meet the residence requirement if you:

are under 16 years of age

were born to a former Australian citizen who lost citizenship before 4 April 2002

were born in Papua before 16 September 1975 to a parent born in Australia who was an Australian citizen at your birth.
